Obituary

John Robert Beck, Jr., 91, of Sycamore, Illinois, died Tuesday, September 19, 2017, at Kishwaukee Hospital, DeKalb. He was born April 10, 1926, in Chicago, son of John Robert Beck Sr. and Louise (Halfpap) Beck.
He married Shirley Diehl on July 9, 1955, in Indianapolis, Indiana. John devoted his life to learning and teaching, retiring from the NIU department of technology. He was a member of Sycamore United Methodist Church, Phi Kappa Delta professional education fraternity and Epsilon Pi Tau industrial education fraternity. He was also a veteran of WWII serving, as a cadet in the United States Air Force.
John's passion was woodworking and he was a gifted and prolific artist, creating works in cast bronze, stoneware, ceramics, sculpture and jewelry. He also excelled at creating functional art, combining his highly developed sense of design with skilled craftsmanship. John had a keen and active mind, a marvelous sense of humor and enjoyed relaxing with an occasional gin and tonic and good conversation.
John is survived by his children, Tammy (Max) Johnston of DeKalb and Beth (Craig) Ward of Geneva; grandchildren, Nathan and Jordan Johnston, and Veronica and Margaret Ward; brother-in-law, Robert Saenger of Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Shirley; and his sister, Lois Saenger.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
