Kenneth R. Bookland, 97, passed away peacefully Thursday, September 21, 2017. He was born September 8, 1920, in Rockford, the son of Gunnard N. and Ella (Carlson) Bookland. Ken attended school in Bridgeport, CT and Rockford, graduating from Rockford Central High School in 1940. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a Navy photographer Third Class in the Asiatic Pacific Theater including Okinawa. Ken married Delores Olga Nelson on June 1, 1946 in Rockford. She predeceased him on August 11, 2009.
Ken was a faithful member of Salem Lutheran Church where he served in various capacities including usher and head usher, Church Treasurer, Choir member, and Church Council Member. He was a leader for Salem Church Boy Scout Troop 3 and Explorer Post 613 for more than 20 years.
Ken worked for Sundstrand Corporation for 43 years, retiring in May 1983. He served as President of the Sundstrand Association, and President of the Retiree Group. He also served as Chairman of the Board for the Sundstrand Credit Union.
Ken belonged to the Cherry Valley Masonic Lodge 173, Freeport Scottish Rite, Tebala Shrine, and the Tebala Legion of Honor. He was a member of the Cherry Valley VFW Post 1596. Ken especially enjoyed playing golf with his grandsons, traveling, fishing, working jigsaw puzzles, and dining with friends.
He is survived by his son, Ronald (Judith) Bookland - Rockford; daughter, Barbara (Donald) Gieryn - New Berlin, WI; grandchildren, Matthew (Laura Kraus) Gieryn - Oak Creek, WI, Steve (Shannon) Gieryn - New Berlin, WI, Andrew (Nicole) Gieryn - Hales Corner, WI, Markus, M.D. (Jessica, M.D.) Bookland - Simsbury, CT, Jeffrey (Samantha) Bookland - Scottsdale, AZ, and Kevin Bookland - St. Charles, MO; great grandchildren, Tyler Gieryn, Emily Gieryn, Anna Gieryn, Julia Bookland, Wesley Bookland, Jackson Burd and Jenna Burd; niece, Diane David; and nephew, Roger Bookland. Predeceased by his parents and brothers, Howard and Donald Bookland.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at Salem Lutheran Church with Pastor Bill Dahlberg officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service in the church. Burial in Arlington Memorial Park, Rockford.
