Obituary

Ragnar "Rags" E. Carlson, 99, of Rockford, went to his heavenly home on Sunday, October 8, 2017. He was born December 13, 1917, in Rockford, the son of Swedish immigrants, Verner and Julia (Pearson) Carlson. Rags was married to Ruby Virginia Swanson and they shared 71 years together before her death on December 24, 2012. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force holding the rank of sergeant during World War II. Rags worked at Rockford Clutch Division and National Lock Company retiring in 1980. He was the oldest and longest member of Temple Baptist Church where he served in many ministries. Rags loved spending time in his workshop creating treasures for family and friends.
Left to share his memories are his children; Randy (Mary Lou) Carlson of Norfolk, VA, Jan (Ron) White of Rockford, and Doug Carlson of Port Washington, WI; 8 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren. Predeceased by a great-grandson.
Rag's family would like to thank the staff at Northern Illinois Hospice and Morning Star Village for the wonderful care given to Rags. He will be missed.
Memorial Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at Fred C. Olson Chapel, 1001 Second Ave., Rockford, with Reverend Gordon Hanstad officiating. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. and military rites will follow the service at Arlington Memorial Park, Rockford.

Condolences & Shared Memories (5)

  1. Nephew Denny

Although we are all saddened by the loss of Uncle Rags and an end of that generation here on earth, we have only wonderful memories of everyone. The importance of faith, family and the wonderful sense of Rags' humor enriched me (as I am sure it did everyone)! Rags left a great legacy for all of us to admire and follow! Love to all, Denny and Barb

  2. Bob Carlson

I have many fond memories of both Rags & Ruby, primarily through being a part of the community of believers at Temple Baptist Church. What a wonderful testimony both had to me. Rags always had such a sweet and positive attitude & a hands-on "can do" spirit. When I needed new woodwork stained to match at my house remodeling, who showed up to do the job, but Rags and his smile! Know your whole family are being held up in prayer during this time, and that you'll have a strong sense of God's perfect provison in for Rags in His presence for eternity...God bless you all

It is impossible to share only one Uncle Rags memory. He filled our lives with laughter - the kind that comes from deep down inside and continues to keep us smiling, even through our tears. Rags Carlson marks the passing of a wonderful generation of Carlson's. We all share life-long gifts of love, laughter, Swedish food, and a deep faith. Thanks be to God for Uncle Rags!
