Obituary

Irving C. Erickson, 87, of Rockford, passed away at home on October 11, 2017. He was born on April 24, 1930 in Rockford, the son of Carl G. and Gertrude A. (Rodstrom) Erickson. Irving married Carolyn J. Von Busch on October 13, 1956 in Rockford. A graduate of East High in 1947; then attended Rockford College and graduated from IIT where he was a member of Tau Beta Pi Fraternity. Irv also attended Trinity Seminary of Chicago, now Trinity University of Bannockburn and took many additional classes at Northern IL. He taught classes at Rock Valley College. Irv worked briefly at Sundstrand and WF John Barnes then began his lifelong engineering career at Barber Coleman in 1956 and retiring in 2014 at the age of 84. He played on many basketball teams including Rockford College, IIT, Trinity, Blackhawk AC's, Roto Rooter, AAU and First Free Church. Irv was a very active member of First Free Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher for many years, on the Church council, Vice Chairman and chairman positions. He was a member of ASHRAE, a registered professional Engineer and Vice Chairman of Trinity College Board. Irv enjoyed many years of camping with his family, European travel with his wife, and family cruises.
Survived by his wife, Carolyn of Rockford; son, Dale K. Erickson of Dallas TX; daughters, Sue Serna of Lawton, OK, and Sheila Guffey of Cleveland, TN; five grandsons; one granddaughter; and two very special great-grandsons, Ethan and Matthew. Predeceased by his parents and infant daughter, Sally.
Visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. at First Free Church, 2223 N. Mulford Rd., Rockford, with Memorial at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Chuck Rife officiating. Private burial at Scandinavian Cemetery.     Irv Erickson, the Father of a beautiful Family. I see all the virtues you have installed in your children I see all the goodness and kindness you and Carolyn given to those around you. Your son admires you beyond this world. I hear it in his voice when he speaks of you often. I thank you and will never forget the generosity you bestowed on all of us. I am honored to have met you; travelled the world with you and best of all, be part of your family as your legacy lives in our hearts. you are loved by so many and you will be missed immensely. Oh, by the way, thank you for letting me win at ping pong at least once. You were my favorite person to play with. Every game I play from this day forward will be in your memory.
