Obituary

Richard "Dick" L. Johnson, 86, of Rockford, passed away on Monday, November 6, 2017. He was born on July 11, 1931 in Rockford, the son of A. Richard and Anna (Engberg) Johnson. Dick was a graduate of East High School, class of 1949. He received his Bachelor's degree from Illinois State University in 1953. Dick married Irene Ek on August 4, 1956 in Rockford. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Korea. Dick was a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church. He was a principal of Guilford Center & Vandercook Elementary schools. For several years he was employed by Carrier Air Conditioning at Wilson Electric. Dick returned to education and taught at Harlem Alternative High School and basic education for Rock Valley College. He was a GED teacher for several years in adult education for Rock Valley, where he guided and motivated adults to achieve a high school diploma. Dick loved sports, golf, basketball, and football. He enjoyed working in the yard and was an avid reader.
Survived by his wife, Irene; sons, Gregory (Sue) Johnson of Lake Forest, IL and Brent (Joann) Johnson of Barrington, IL; grandchildren, Mark, Jack, Claudia, and Lisa Johnson; and sister, Marie Samuelson. Predeceased by his parents; and grandchildren, Lauren and Tyler Johnson.
Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 10, 2017 in First Lutheran Church, 225 S 3rd St. Rockford. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service in the church. Burial of ashes at Scandinavian Cemetery.
