Arlene Francisco, 94, of Rockford, IL, entered eternal rest at 1 am Tuesday, January 30, 2018, at Fairhaven Retirement Center in Rockford.
Arlene was born August 10, 1923 in rural Battle Creek, in northeast Nebraska to Adeline (Duhachek) and Lawrence Broberg. She attended rural elementary and secondary schools, graduating from Newman Grove High School in 1940. Upon graduation, Arlene attended Wayne State teachers college in Wayne, Nebraska.
She married Martin Crantz on August 30, 1943 in El Paso, TX. Martin was a US Air Force pilot, piloting B24 bombers. Martin gave his life for his country, perishing in an airplane crash in February, five months after their marriage. Arlene then worked in a munitions plant to support the war effort during World War II. She then returned to Wayne State, earning a bachelor's degree in education and later, earned a master's degree from National College of Education. During her time at Wayne State, she met Dick Francisco, a US Navy aviator, who was visiting Wayne State to see family. They were married on December 3, 1946.
Arlene lived in many locations around the United States and Japan, following her husband's Navy career. At each place, she taught elementary school and loved all the little ones in her care. She showed creative skills in teaching the children to construct unique arts and crafts.
Always the consummate hostess, she graciously and generously opened their home, providing a touch of home for servicemen and women and providing delicious homemade meals. Arlene was a member of First Evangelical Free Church.
Surviving her is one sister, Orpha Erickson of Peoria, IL, three nephews; Roger (and Pamela) Erickson of Modesto CA, Paul (and Linda) Erickson of Warrenville, IL, and Ken (and Marianna) Erickson of Peoria, IL; brother-in-law, Jack Francisco and sister-in-law, Beverly Burnham. Preceding her in death were her parents, Lawrence and Adeline Broberg, her first husband, Martin E Crantz, her second husband, Dick Francisco, and her brother, Stanley Broberg.
