Obituary

Barbara J. (Nelson) Anderson, 81, died after a long illness on the morning of Sunday, February 4, 2018, in Alden Debes Rehabilitation & Health Care Center, Rockford, Illinois. Barb was born on October 18, 1936 in Rockford, Illinois. She graduated from East High School in 1954, and worked in secretarial jobs until her marriage to Donald S. Anderson on January 2, 1959. She was a great stay-at-home mom to Brad and Brian through their school years. When the boys went to college, she re-entered the work force, again in secretarial positions, the last as secretary to the president at Anderson Bros. Manufacturing of Rockford, later known as APV Crepaco, before retiring.
As a longtime member of First Evangelical Covenant Church, Barb had many, many friends through the years of being a member of the Faith Circle, a high school group counselor, and numerous years with the AWANA Wednesday night program. She truly had a servant's heart and was deeply involved in the many ministries of First Covenant, and the lives of its youth. Barb and Don, in later years, loved to go out to eat for every meal, and had a large group of friends that they would meet at favorite local restaurants. She will be missed by those who worked at these eating spots as well. Those who joined them will remember these meals as times of good food, great friends, and much laughter.
They also had several out-of-town friends that they loved, and enjoyed traveling in their retirement, but always had to get home by any event or milestone involving the granddaughters.
Barb is survived by her husband of 59 years, Don, and their two sons - Brad (Jackie) Anderson and Brian (Amy) Anderson, both of Rockford. Barb's four granddaughters were the focus of her life - Jaymie (Ben) Heintz of Rockford, Katelyn (Nick) Beyer of Chicago, Corey Anderson of Chicago, and Krista (Connor) Anderson-Larson of Saint Paul, Minnesota. Also survived by a brother-in-law, Charlie "Ev" Berglund of Rockford, and a nephew, Jeff (Colleen) Berglund of Bloomington, Minn. Barb was preceded in death by her parents, Wally Nelson and Violet Brolander, her in-laws, Sherman and Vera Anderson, and a sister-in-law Dorene Berglund.
The family would like to thank the staff of Swedish-American Hospital, Van Matre HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital, Alden Debes Rehabilitation & Health Care Center, Northern Illinois Hospice, and Tracy Sukala, who cared for Barb in her months of recovery from surgery.
The funeral is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 9, 2018 at First Evangelical Covenant Church, 316 Wood Road, Rockford, IL, with Reverend Peter Dibley officiating. Burial at Scandinavian Cemetery. Visitation will be prior to the funeral service, from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. Memorials can be made to First Evangelical Covenant Church.

From the time we met in Dayton, when my dad and Don were in achool for NCR, what a wonderful friendship. As you all travelled through Louisville to Daytona 500, my mom would clean for days in anticipation. Our last face to face visit was after my marriage in 2008. I have such precious memories of each of you....Brad and Brian. Love you all. Prayers with you, Don.

  9. Joyce & Dave Davis

We will aways remember our great times together in Rockford when Joyce & Dave would come to Rockford from Phoenix. Don and Dave would go to the NASCAR races and Barb and Joyce would have fun shopping while they were away. We miss you but will see you again in heaven.
