Patricia A. Herbert

Born: Monday, April 12, 1937
Passed: Wednesday, February 14, 2018

Patricia (Pat) Ann Salzmann Herbert, age 80, of Elgin, IL passed away on February 14, 2018. Pat was born in Chicago IL on April 12, 1937 to Alexandra Giralda Strandlund and William J. Salzmann.

In her younger years, in additional to raising 5 children, Pat volunteered for the Elgin Junior Woman's Club and was a Brownie Troop Leader at St. Mary's School in Elgin. Pat is what we would now call "Google," if you had a question, she most likely knew the answer. Most people would have been surprised to know that Pat did not go to college. Because she was a veracious reader she earned her degree from the library of street smarts retaining everything she read in books - especially books about mystery and travel. Pat loved spending weekends, with her husband Greg, at their summer trailer home retreat. Years later, cruising became their passion. They went on so many cruises it is impossible to count. Another passion, was Elderhostel travel vacations. Pat loved learning and was always looking for destinations where they could learn and experience new things. One of their last Elderhostel vacations was in Arizona, where they learned about forensic DNA and other investigative techniques used in the popular CSI crime television show.

Patricia is survived by her 5 children: Barbara (David) Ehrhard of Scottsdale, AZ, Laura (Bill) Ehrhardt of Bartlett, IL, Gregory Jr. Herbert of Elgin, James Herbert of Belvidere, IL, and Michael (April) Herbert of Moyock, NC. Also surviving are 4 grandchildren Matthew, Brian, Michael, and Scott and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband of 60 years, Gregory, who died in 2016, and her brothers and a sister.

Visitation will be on Monday, February 19th at 9:00 am at St. Mary's Church, 397 Fulton Street, Elgin, IL 60120, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 am and cemetery burial immediately following at River Valley Memorial Cemetery / Shrine of the Crucifixion Garden.

The family wishes to thank all of the employees at The Vines at Countryside in Elgin for its warm and supportive care. And, special thanks go to The Vines owners: Laurie Compton and Kristy Ray, Solace Hospice & Palliative Care, and grandson/RN Matthew for providing Pat with a loving, caring, and nurturing home.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church Student Scholarship program, 397 Fulton Street, Elgin, IL 60120 or the American Legion Elgin Post 57, 820 N. Liberty Street, Elgin, IL 60120.
