James R. Stropes, Sr., 97, of Rockford, passed away August, 11, 2017. He was born November 18, 1919 in Indianapolis, IN, the son of Ira V. and Eva (Tlacko) Stropes. James married Margaret L. Ludlow on September 10, 1945 in Racine, WI. He was a member of Alpine Lutheran Church, where he was an usher and on the church council and building committee. James was also a lifetime member of Pioneers Union. Jim was a WWII veteran, serving in the European and African theatres. He volunteered many years with Meals on Wheels and at the The Villa at PA Peterson.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret; son, James R. Stropes, Jr.; sister-in-law, JoAnn Lee; brother-in-law, Harland Lee; and nieces, Kristin (Randy) Ott, Kathryn (Philip) Ong, Karen (Jerome) Sheets, and various other nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Ira V. Stropes, Jr. and Franklin John Stropes, Stephen Larry Stropes and Jack Stropes; and sister-in-laws, Patricia, Beverly and Elsie Stropes.
Memorial Service will be held on Monday, August 28, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in Alpine Lutheran Church, 5001 Forest View Ave., Rockford, with Dan Wynard officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service. Memorials can be made to Habitat for Humanity, 5183 Harlem Rd., Loves Park, IL 61111, or Alpine Lutheran Church.
