Print Obituary & Condolences

Martin A. Pechloff of Rockford, Illinois died in Sheridan Shores Convalescent Home in Chicago on Jan. 9th, 2018. He was born in Chicago on Dec. 23, 1926 and was orphaned at a very young age. At the age of 17, he was brought to Rockford by a caring older couple who offered him a home and a job. Although he remained illiterate for his entire life, he made a good living by being a night maintenance person for JL Clark Co and by working for several Rockford families as a handy man during the day. He lived most of his adult life at the same home that he moved into as a teenager. He lived with and cared for a Downs Syndrome man whom he had met in the orphanage while they were young. He called Danny Shanihan his brother. Martin and Danny loved to celebrate Christmas. Each year they would host a huge Christmas party at their home. Most of the people whom Martin worked for would attend his party. After Danny passed away suddenly several years ago, Martin's life became more difficult. He never quite recovered from his loss. He lived in several assisted living homes before ending up in Sheridan Shores. Everyone loved Martin. Even though he wasn't literate, he was smart and compassionate. For the last several years of his life, he was totally deaf. Communicating with him became nearly impossible. Considering the many obstacles in his life, he managed to live 91 years. He has now joined his beloved Danny.

Yes, Mom and I, remember Martin and Danny very well. I grew up directly across from the Nash's home where Martin, and later Danny, too, lived. He loved working in the flower gardens and was quite ambitious. It seems he was very brilliant when he encountered a head injury. I'm sure life was not easy for him, but it was good of the Nash's to take him in. Hope he did not suffer a lot. Eleanor and Marie Sundeen
